IT pros often assume virtual administrators are unnecessary when virtualization is implemented in a data center environment. However, virtual admins can make a virtual server administrator's life easier. Here are five reasons why you need a virtual admin in your IT department.

1) The virtual seed has been planted

The virtual seed has been planted by today's businesses that have decided to ;? When implementing virtualization technologies and products such as virtual servers, virtual desktops and virtual storage, you need to plan for the virtualization management. If you are implementing virtualization in your organization, chances are you will have an increase of virtual machines (servers) within your physical network. You need someone who can monitor all virtual environments and create reports when necessary.

2) Monitoring is essential

When monitoring physical servers with a server or desktop admin role it gives them a better feel for how much memory should be available on the system after other applications, processes and services start up. By having knowledge of how many virtual machines should run on a specific ESX host from a resource perspective means they can also know if another virtual machine needs to be started or moved to another host based on the virtual machine's resource requirements.

3) The virtual world is new to everyone

Having virtual administrators monitor virtual machines and make sure they are running properly means virtual servers can be moved from one host server to another with minimal virtual server downtime. Since best virtual admin know exactly how much memory, CPU and disk I/O each virtual machine requires; they can also create reports when needed by vCenter Server or any other hardware monitoring solution such as HP OpenView, CA Unicenter etc.

4) Need someone who understands virtualization best practices

Although you may think the project team responsible for implementing VMware ESX/ESXi will provide training on understanding best practices for virtualization with your company's environment, chances are they won't. The virtualization project team will most likely move on to the next virtualization customer or VMware customer and you are left to fend for yourself with virtual technologies. A virtual administrator can provide training, best practices information and virtual support when needed.

5) Need someone who knows what needs to be monitored

A server admin that has knowledge of virtual servers will be able to help create reports when needed. Virtual admins also know how much disk space is required for virtual machines if storage is implemented within your physical network infrastructure as well as how much additional disk space needs to be added before virtual machines are started up on ESX hosts within your company's virtual environment. Additionally, a virtual administrator can monitor pertinent performance metrics along with virtual machine statistics when virtualization technologies are implemented within your company infrastructure.

Conclusion

Having virtual admins in today's virtual environment can greatly benefit organizations when virtualization technologies and products are being implemented. This is because virtual admins have the ability to monitor virtual environments from a performance, resource consumption and management perspective while creating reports needed for virtual support. If you implement virtualization with VMware ESX/ESXi, you will most likely need more than one virtual administrator to keep up with all your virtual machines (servers) that will be created within your physical network environment along with the monitoring needed of them on an ongoing basis.
